Stripe integration for card payments and subscriptions

Stripe works with companies registered in Estonia and is a good fit for card payments and recurring billing. It is not built into the studio’s engine: a Stripe integration is separate development within a project, with its own estimate and timeline in the contract.

What Stripe is good for

  • Subscriptions and memberships: a fitness club, an online course, a service billed monthly. Stripe Billing covers this.
  • Buyers mostly from other countries who pay by card.
  • One-tap payments on phones through Apple Pay and Google Pay.
  • Recurring SEPA Direct Debit collections from customers in the euro area.

What Stripe does not offer

Stripe has no familiar Estonian bank links, where the shopper taps Swedbank or LHV and confirms the payment in their online bank. So a store selling mainly in Estonia usually needs Montonio, which is built into the engine. Stripe is added next to it when subscriptions or international buyers come into the picture.

What the shopper sees

A Stripe payment form or Apple Pay and Google Pay buttons at checkout. For a subscription the shopper picks a plan, enters the card once, and charges then run automatically on schedule. Cancelling or changing the subscription through a link is possible if it is part of the agreed scope.

What the owner gets in the admin panel

One-off payments appear on the order card with a status, the same way as Montonio payments. For subscriptions the scope is agreed separately: whether it is enough to see active subscribers in the Stripe dashboard, or a list in the site’s admin panel with billing dates and statuses is needed.

What the business needs to provide

  • A Stripe account registered to your Estonian company, with verification completed. Fees are paid to Stripe under its pricing.
  • API keys for test and live mode.
  • For subscriptions: plans, billing frequency and cancellation rules that match the site’s terms of sale.

What to decide upfront for subscriptions

  • What happens when a charge fails: how many retries, and when access is closed.
  • How the customer cancels the subscription and updates the card.
  • How the subscription terms are stated in the terms of sale and in the confirmation email.

How the integration works

  • Reviewing the scenario: one-off payments, subscriptions or both.
  • Estimating and fixing the scope in the contract.
  • Development and testing in Stripe test mode, including failed payments and subscription cancellation.
  • Switching to live keys and checking the first real payment.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can Stripe accept Estonian bank links?

No, Montonio handles those. Stripe covers cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and subscriptions.

Can Stripe and Montonio run on the same site?

Yes. Montonio works out of the box, and Stripe is added as separate development — for example, only for subscriptions.

Does Stripe suit gym or studio memberships?

Yes, Stripe Billing handles recurring charges. Rules for cancelling and switching plans are best worked out before launch and written into the terms of sale.

Where does the money go, and who pays the fees?

The money goes to your company’s account under the Stripe contract, and fees are paid to Stripe. The studio has no access to the payments.

Is Stripe enough for a store that sells only in Estonia?

Usually not as the only option, since many Estonian shoppers pay by bank link. Such a store is better off starting with Montonio and adding Stripe when a specific need appears, such as subscriptions.

How much does a Stripe integration cost?

The starting price is shown at the top of the page and covers the minimal typical scope. Subscriptions, a subscriber list in the admin panel and other extra scenarios increase the scope; the exact amount is fixed in the quote and contract before work starts.
